Antique Blue & White Asian “Double Happiness” Lidded Keepsake BoxThis lidded box is decorated with leaf, vine, and floral motifs with the ideogram shuangxi in the center. This decorative symbol is created by the combination of two characters xi (joy) and therefore called shuangxi (double joy). It is understood as a "double mark of happiness" which generally signifies marital happiness. It appears in porcelain decorations from at least the early 19th century and seems to have increased to great popularity around the time of Emperor Tongzhi's wedding in 1872. This wedding was an occasion of historical significance unique to the era, as it was the first imperial marriage after the Kangxi period more than 200 years earlier. As an important and very famous event, it can be understood that the increase in popularity of this symbol stems from this time. Until today we find this symbol on articles used in connection with Chinese weddings. This piece measures approximately 7 ⅜” long. 3 ⅞” wide, 3” tall (with the lid), and 2 ¼” deep. It is in excellent condition with some patina to the unglazed portion of the item (base and inner rim) that falls in line with age and use. This does not detract and the item remains beautiful.
