: Lovely, hard to find reproduction Chinese dowry box that was a gift from a friend at Christmas 1999. The boxes were sold in museum gift shops. The red enamel paint is etched with classic Chinese designs that have been painted in a flat black and outlined with gilt. The original gift box and a note with the box’s description are included.
THE DOWRY BOX
For thousands of years in China, the family of a young bride was expected to give a dowry of gifts and money to the family of the groom. This elegant hand painted wooden box is a reproduction of a traditional dowry box that was once used by the bride to carry such gifts. The red color symbolizes the joy of marriage. This quality replica is handmade by artists in China.
